Reviewing in general, is a great way to express how much you either loved or hated something, and gaming is no different. Games can range from a variety of different prices, which is why reviewing games is important if you are absolutely obsessed with a game or hate it, despite what it costs.

Now imagine that there is a game that you’ve been thinking about buying for months because let’s face it, there have probably been one or two games that you’ve been psyched to get your hands on and play the moment it came out. Maybe it’s something that has been incredibly hyped up and you’ve been wanting to purchase it for the longest time. Whatever the situation may be, this is bound to happen to every gamer at one time or another.

If you’re set on purchasing a game, but opt to read a few reviews before making the final sale definite, this could make or break your decision. So, whether you’re the one who is going to review a game or read a review, it’s wise to bear in mind that what you or someone else says can greatly impact their choice of buying said game.

So, if a game is a lot of money or out of your price range at the time and sitting around and waiting for the next sale on the game in a few months is totally out of the question, then reading a review could help you decide if it’s worth it. If it’s something that other gamers have been raving about, you’ll want to drop your money on the game immediately! Therefore, knowing how to leave, delete, and edit reviews on Steam can help games get the recognition they deserve and help gamers save their money before buying bad games.

This guide will offer some tips on how to correctly review a game on Steam, covering all bases such as:

  • How to write a review
  • Adding it to the website
  • Deleting a review
  • Editing and updating past reviews

How to Write a Game Review

Before you can begin to think about adding a review on Steam, you must have an idea of how to write a review. Now this is really one of the easiest things you can do because all you have to do is base it solely on your opinion.

It may feel like it’s pretty self-explanatory and you might find yourself feeling like you know exactly what you’re going to write. Surely if you thought that the game you just played was the best game you’ve ever played or the worst, then you’re ready to boast about how much you loved or hated it.

Here are a few things to keep in mind on what to add to a review, no matter the content of the game:

  • The story, whether it’s RPG or Literary RPG
  • How good or bad the graphics were
  • The gameplay
  • What genre it is
  • Whether it is single-player, multiplayer, or online
  • Sound

Some people determine whether or not they are going to buy a game solely on the reviews. For some, if they see one bad review, then so be it, they don’t need the game anymore. Or there are countless positive reviews that make their decision set in stone, they are going to buy the game! So remembering why you liked or didn’t like a game is important to add in a review. Just add anything that comes to mind that could solidify or change someone’s decision to purchase a game.

The Process of Adding a Review on Steam

Leaving a review on Steam is easy, all you have to do is follow these steps and you’ll be closer to getting your review, written and posted.

Once you’ve chosen a game, either one from your library after you’ve logged into your account or if you’re looking to read other reviews before writing your own, go under Community Activity, where you can type in a game of your choice and read all of the reviews before writing your own.

Step 1: Click into the game and the site page should pop up like it normally would when you go to play it.

Step 2: Click on the first page listed that says “Store Page” where it will take you to a different page where you and many others can review that particular game.

Step 3: In the comment box that says “Write a Review for (Game)”, type your review.

Step 4: You have the option of saying whether you’d recommend the game, what language you want your review to be in, and if you want it visible to the public, and if so, enable the comments or tick the boxes accordingly.

Step 5: Hit post review.

If you’re looking to check out other reviews for a particular game, just click the “Visit Store Page” next to the price of the game and you’ll be taken to that specific game’s page. Once you’ve gotten to the page, you can scroll to the bottom and read other gamer’s reviews and interactions—the most helpful views are on the left and the recently made ones on the right for easy reading.

How to Delete Your Past Review

If you’ve written a review and come to realize that you either don’t want it to be public anymore or have changed your views on a game, you can easily delete it. There are many different reasons as to why someone may choose to delete a review. Follow these simple steps below and your review will be gone for good!

Step 1: Once you’ve gotten to your profile page, click “Reviews.”

Step 2: You’ll be taken to a page full of every review you’ve left on a game. Here, you’ll click on the thumbs-up or thumbs-down icons, depending on how you’ve reviewed games in the past.

Step 3: Once you’ve clicked the icons, you’ll be redirected to a page with all of your reviews. Press on any review that you wish to delete and you have the opportunity to delete it.

If you happen to be on a site where you aren’t logged in, but you find yourself wanting to check the past reviews that you’ve written, you can do that. Just remember that you won’t actively be able to delete any of your comments unless you’re logged in. But if you want to read your reviews and other gamers, you just have to visit the store page for the game and scroll to the bottom where the reviews are categorized in order of most popular and recently written reviews.

The Key to Editing and Updating Reviews

If you changed your opinion on a game and still want to leave a review, this is where editing comes in handy. If you closely follow the directions for deleting a review (found above), you will be taken to an old review of yours where you have the option to delete or edit your review.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on editing your already written and published review:

Step 1: Once you’ve logged into your account, click on “Frame Counting” in the top left corner and hit “Profile” where you’ll be directed to your own personal profile page.

Step 2: On the right-hand side there will be a list of information, scroll down and select “Reviews” where the number of reviews you’ve written will appear right beside it.

Step 3: Click on the thumbs-up or thumbs-down (depending on how you previously rated it) and it will take you to a page where you can edit it.

Step 4: On the right-hand side outlined in green will be a place where you can edit your review, just click “Edit Review.”

Here, you have the option to change anything about your review:

  • Change your thumbs-down to a thumbs-up and vice versa
  • Make your review private or public
  • Allow for comments if you haven’t already before or disable comments entirely

Step 5: Once you’ve successfully edited your review, you have the chance to update your review entirely by clicking “Save Changes” and re-publishing it.
