Harry Potter. The boy who lived. Harry Potter is one of the most popular fantasy franchises out there. Several books, tie in films covering all these books, and even its very own theme park at Universal Studios. However, a franchise’s size does not simply reflect the popularity of it. However, what does is the copious amounts of fan made works and the mountains of cash being made by the franchise. It only made sense that a setting like the Hogwarts Academy of Wizards and Witches would be made open for fans to explore. While the parks are an immersive way to imagine yourself in the famous fictitious school, you still can not cast spells in the real world.
Enter Hogwarts Legacy, an open world gaming experience where you make your own custom character and guide them through the legendary campus during the 1800’s. By stepping into this world, you also accept the responsibility to choose between a keyboard and a controller to lift your wand to cast powerful spells.

Before you can apply for enrollment at this fictional school of sorcery, you must first know about the needs your computer must meet. There are minimum requirements, but you can also go for the more recommended setup as shown on the game’s Steam page.
Just a simple walk down Hogsmeade.
For more casual folks who are not quite as informed on the worldbuilding of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, there is only a small handful of information that you may want to know. First off, humans who can't cast magic are referred to as Muggles. Shocking absolutely no one, you do not play as a muggle. Wander through halls that will be familiar to you from both the films and books.
While this game takes place before the major events of the Harry Potter series, meaning you will not be meeting the Boy Who Lived, Hermione, or Ron anytime soon, you can still enroll and be chosen for one of the four factions of Hogwarts—the houses of Griffendor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw. Griffendor is represented by the lion of chivalrous bravery, a house of heroes beloved by Headmaster Dumbledoor. Slytherin is the serpent of ambitious cunning, the house of trickery and plotting. Hufflepuff is represented by the badger of loyal hard workers, a house so dedicated to hard work that they carry on in the background. Ravenclaw is represented by the raven of wit and learning, off studying in the library while the heroes and villains do battle on the campus grounds.
Sadly, you can not play Quidditch in Hogwarts Legacy, but that thankfully means that you will not be spending minutes on end playing a match only for your actions to all be invalidated because someone grabbed the Golden Snitch while you were busy playing the actual game. You can make friends with various different NPCs such as Eleazar Fig, Abraham Ronen, Mirabel Garlick, and more! However, Hogwarts is not only sunshine and rainbows as you battle all kinds of enemies ranging from bullies and dark wizards to full blown draconic monsters. There are so many different things to do in this game. When all is said and done, what are the pros and cons of using a game controller vs. a keyboard?
A keyboard is a device lined with buttons relating to numbers and letters. You know what a keyboard is. It was used to write this article, and you likely used it to find this article in the first place. There are definitely a lot of pros to using a keyboard. With enough typing, you can train yourself to work without looking down at the keys. You can move the controls around, binding them to different keys as you see fit. This is not something you can do with a standard controller. Plus, considering how everyone uses keyboards in their everyday life, there is a good chance that you will have a lot more experience using it. That said, keyboards are not explicitly designed for video games.
This game is compatible with both XBox and Playstation controllers. Who doesn’t love the feeling of those spinning joysticks allowing for easier movement? The way that the controller was designed to be held is specifically for players. Shocking, I know. Being designed for video games, there is a good chance that you can get a good grasp of the controls (pun somewhat intended) much more easily. Depending on which type of controller you have, you can even hook up a wireless controller as long as it has a stable connection.

The way you play this game more or less boils down to personal preference. Depending on how you grew up and what games you play more often, you will likely find yourself leaning one way or the other. There are plenty of players who choose keyboards, and some who choose the controller. It is a simple preference that comes from the way you have been working all your life. As you work and wander through the halls of Hogwarts, you will make your own choices, make your own mistakes, and you will always be the one who blazes your own trail.
